Little Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers

by Ralph Moody

When we first started reading Little Britches, we all found it to be very boring. The kids all complained about it. They wanted me to stop reading it and whined when I would insist upon it. I only read it becuase the chapters were short and it was easy to read to them before bedtime. I was too tired to take on anything more difficult. (We had just moved to Croatia.)

I'm glad I kept reading. Eventually, everybody enjoyed the book. The kids were interrupting me to ask for clarification at verious points.

What I liked best about the book were the ethical lessons that Little Britches's father taught him. I wish that I had so many bits of wisdom stored inside of me to share with MY kids. Unfortunately, there was bad language in the book. I found that in order to read it aloud to the children, it was necessary for me to edit the text in real time. I especially was disappointed with the Lord's name being taken in vain.

I would recommend this to parents as good bedtime reading for children. Just be ready to edit the language, especially that used by the ranchers.

On June 15, 2007, the McCollum family arrived in Zagreb, Croatia. Croatia is a country with a long history of calling itself Christian but with few who actually know Christ as their savior. The McCollum family believes God has called them to teach the people of Croatia what it truly means to be followers of Christ.

Once they finish formal language school, they will serve on a church planting team with other missionaries and Croats. Church planting, or starting churches, is a core aspect of SEND International ministries:

Starting churches where there are none and helping them where there are by
Evangelizing the unreached,
Nurturing disciples, and
Developing leaders from among the national people.

On their journey to Croatia, one elderly pastor shared his story of a life well lived for the glory of God. This has become a growing passion for the family as they begin serving in God's work in Croatia.

After years of preparation, the McCollum family is glad to be where God has called them. Although right now their relationships are limited by language, they look forward to the day when they can communicate clearly with Croats and actively engage in ministry.
