Croaticum 1B City Tour PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael McCollum

On Thursday our language class enjoyed a tour of some points of interest in Zagreb. We were led by our professor, Sanda.

We started our tour in Zagreb's botanical garden. Although this botanical garden is the middle of the city, when it was built it was in the "suburbs." The city has expanded around it.

Sanda took us by the national archive which until recent years was the library for the University of Zagreb. Our language classes, Croaticum, are in one of University's colleges; the college of philosophy.

One of the most impressive buildings in Zagreb is the National Theater. Late last year, Brenda, Ariel, and Lily went to a ballet at this theater.

In front of the theater is a well. The bronze art was sculpted by Ivan Mestrovich , Croatia's most famous sculpter. Our final destination for this tour was his gallery. Unfortunately, cameras aren't allowed in the gallery. I did take one picture before I found that out.

Of course, we had to take the world's shortest furnicular railway instead of the stairs leading to the upper city. What kind of a tour would it be if we walked the whole way?!?

It was a nice time of walking around the city with friends learning a bit about what is important to the people of Croatia.

Update: The school posted my pictures on their website! http://croaticum.ffzg.hr/eng/galerija.html

On June 15, 2007, the McCollum family arrived in Zagreb, Croatia. Croatia is a country with a long history of calling itself Christian but with few who actually know Christ as their savior. The McCollum family believes God has called them to teach the people of Croatia what it truly means to be followers of Christ.

Once they finish formal language school, they will serve on a church planting team with other missionaries and Croats. Church planting, or starting churches, is a core aspect of SEND International ministries:

Starting churches where there are none and helping them where there are by
Evangelizing the unreached,
Nurturing disciples, and
Developing leaders from among the national people.

On their journey to Croatia, one elderly pastor shared his story of a life well lived for the glory of God. This has become a growing passion for the family as they begin serving in God's work in Croatia.

After years of preparation, the McCollum family is glad to be where God has called them. Although right now their relationships are limited by language, they look forward to the day when they can communicate clearly with Croats and actively engage in ministry.

How will they preach unless they are sent? - Romans 10:15
