It's a strange feeling
when the place you used to call "home" becomes international news.
When I got up this morning and checked my email, there was a
message from friends of ours, Derek & Jenny Baker who are missionaries in
the Yukon Territory of Canada. They sent us a link to an MSNBC
story about a bridge collapsing during Wednesday evenings rush
hour. I thanked them for the alert and quickly started reading
about it. Indeed, it was Interstate 35W as it crosses the
Mississippi river. This main artery in Minneapolis is one that I
have driven many times.
Collapsing Bridge The next thing I did was send an email to some family and friends
in the Twin Cities to ask if anybody I know was directly
affected.
Soon, daily life started here in Croatia for us. Brenda's language
helper showed up 50 minutes early at 7:10 AM. I got a call from a
friend from the Twin Cities who is working in Croatia with the
Army. He was calling about an ironing board but he did mention that
the bridge collapse was on CNN. We continued to do our things.
By the afternoon, I must confess that it was out of my mind.
That is until I got a phone call from Steve Meeker, SEND's country
leader in Croatia and the director for the MK camp where my
daughter, Ariel, is this week. He was calling to see if we had any
information about the bridge collapse because Ariel had seen a news
report on TV and was
upset about it. She's in a little village 45 minutes west of Zagreb and about 4800 miles east of Minneapolis. I told him what I knew and we hung up.
Later I was at a store and saw the end of a news clip on Nova, a Croatian TV station. This is everywhere. Now that it
is time for me to go to bed, I checked the web and see that it is
is the lead article on MSNBC, FOX News, and CNN's web sites. Even Wikipedia has a big article!
I really must go to bed, but as I go to sleep this catastrophe is
what will be in my prayers. Please, take a moment and pray for the
families of those impacted. Pray that God would be glorified
through this terrible thing. Pray that our children wouldn't feel isolated from their loved ones in Minnesota. (As of this writing, Ariel is the only one of our children who knows anything about the bridge collapse. The last thing I need is for our children to be afraid to cross a bridge now.)
